INTERCESSION
All Bible Studies are written by Pastor Darla Winn unless otherwise indicated.

Prerequisites For All Effective Intercession
Pray, Say and Command

Prerequisites For All Effective Intercession

Love is the first prerequisite

Romans 5:5
For God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us.

We were created in the image of God, Genesis 1:26. I John 4:8 says that God is love; therefore, we were made in the image of love. When we became born again we were born of God, Who is love, therefore we were born of Love. We were created in the image of God but conform to our perception of God.

I Thessalonians 4:9
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. KJV

I John 4:7
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is (springs) from God; and he who loves [his fellowmen] is begotten (born) of God and is coming [progressively] to know and understand God [to perceive and recognize and get a better and clearer knowledge of Him]. AMPV

If we do not have love for all men then the prayers we pray for those we do love may not get answered.

Galatians 5:6
   …Faith is activated by love.

The love law of the family of God is:

John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. KJV

Our passion for God produces compassion for man.

We are also commanded to love our enemies.

Matthew 5:44-45
But I say unto you, Love your enemies,
(those who appose you) bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.
That ye may be the children of your Father, which is in heaven: for He maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust
. KJV (Emphasis Mine)

What rains on the just rains on the unjust. The blessing of God on the believer effects the nonbeliever.

Christ died for all that means He died for your enemies too. Provision has been made for the unjust and just alike. The reason that we can love and pray for our enemies is because of the manner of love the Father has bestowed on us. It’s because of what our spirit is made out of. The more we grow in God and His Word the more in touch we become with our inner man, which is made out of God substance – we become de-attached from the carnal nature. In other words we become more in touch with whom we are made in the image of, God, then we do with the lower nature that is the old man Adam. Many Christians relate more with the Adam man then they do the Jesus man.

I John 3:1
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God. KJV

This God kind of love is willing to lay down his/her life for mankind. Not the physical life, as much as being willing to give up our own will and way of being and doing and take time to pray and intercede for all men. Christ died for all men; we should be willing to die as well. This is where suffering comes in. This is how we enter into His suffering.

Jesus had compassion on people. Jesus was God’s love expressed on earth.

Matthew 9:36-38
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
Then saith He unto His disciples, the harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few.
Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth laborers into His harvest. KJV

Jesus was moved with compassion and healed the sick.

Matthew 14:14
And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and He healed their sick. KJV

Jesus’ compassion led to the feeding of the 5000:

Matthew 15:32
Then Jesus called His disciples unto Him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. KJV

In His compassion Jesus healed the blind.

Matthew 20:34
So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him. KJV

Compassion led to healing the leper.

Mark 1:40-41
And there came a leper to Him, beseeching Him, and kneeling down to Him and saying unto Him, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth His hand, and touched Him, and saith unto Him, I will: be thou clean. KJV

In His compassion Jesus healed every person who asked. (Mark 6:56, Luke 6:19, Matt. 4:23-24). Jesus taught His disciples to share in His compassion by sending out the twelve Luke 9:1-6 and the seventy Luke 10:1-19. His compassion was to be carried on after His ascension as He made healing one of the signs of the believer, Mark 16:16-18

In every instance where Jesus was moved with compassion, the person or persons were delivered. Human sympathy says, “I know how you feel; I’m so sorry.” Divine compassion says, “I feel how you feel.” This brings deliverance. Jesus felt what Mary and Martha felt as He groaned within and also wept.

John 11:33-35
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, He groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
   Jesus wept. KJV

Jesus’ compassion brought deliverance. If we have the divine compassion of Jesus there will be deliverance. Many times we have tried to bring deliverance without a divine compassion. That’s where prayer and intercession come in. Weeping with them that weep brings healing.

John 14:12
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do because I go unto My Father. KJV

The Works that He did were born out of Love and Compassion. The works that the believer shall do are products of sharing in His ministry of love and compassion.

Jesus was not partial; we cannot pick and chose those to extend love and compassion. If we are not willing to pray for those we do not prefer then our prayers for those we do prefer will not be fruitful. The compassion of Jesus and the Love of God should be able to permeate our heart, and our spirit to bring deliverance into the lives of others. Dedicated believers can enter into this type of compassion one way and one way only and that is fellowship with God. You cannot fellowship with God; you cannot sit in the Presence of the Great God of this Universe without His love permeating your being, without His compassion flowing into you. And it is when you can get into this place that you will be able to do as Jesus said... “Love thy neighbor as yourself” John 13:34.

Boldness is the second prerequisite for intercession:
It’s okay to pray for boldness.

Acts 4:29
And now, Lord, observe their threats and grant to Your bond servants [full freedom] to declare your message fearlessly. AMPV

The King James says, “With all boldness they may speak Thy Word.”

Acts 4:31
And when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continued to speak the Word of God with freedom and boldness and courage.

Their prayer was answered. Paul asked for the Ephesians people to pray for him to have boldness.

Ephesians 6:18-21
Pray at all times (on every occasion in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people.)
And [pray] also for me, that [freedom of] utterance may be given me, that I may open my mouth to proclaim boldly the mystery of the good news (the Gospel),
For which I am an ambassador in a coupling chain [in prison. Pray] that I may declare it boldly and courageously, as I ought to do.
Now that you may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord [and His service], will tell you everything.

We need boldness to act. There maybe times when you are interrupted during your daily task to intercede. You may not know for whom you are interceding, but you do it. In Kenneth Hagin’s book “The Art of Intercession” he shares a story of the great intercessor Charlie Hollandsworth of Spokane. While he was interceding for whom he did not know, after agonizing in the spirit he was bidden by the Holy Spirit to go to the Monroe Street Bridge. He arrived there to find a man with one leg over the bridge ready to jump. Charlie jumped out of his car grabbed the man and persuaded the man to get into his car. He ended up leading this young man to the Lord. This man had boldness to act. We need boldness to act on God’s Word and to act on what the Holy Spirit is telling us to do. “Many people have jobs and duties which do not allow them to give themselves whole heartily to intercession. Yet I have found that as you go about doing whatever you have to do, on the inside of you, you can be praying.” Kenneth Hagin “The Art of Intercession” God will not lay a burden of intercession on you unless you are available to move. If you are not available God will seek out someone else. When you are on a job that doesn’t involve a lot of mental work you can pray on the job. Don’t be so quick to shove off the burden to pray. Be bold and act on it. One of the things that keeps people from being effective in their intercession is the feeling of inferiority. They don’t feel worthy. They are sin conscious.

Isaiah 43:25-26
I, even I, am He Who blots out and cancel your transgressions, for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
Put Me in remembrance [remind Me of your merits]; let us plead and argue together, Set forth your case, that you may be justified (proved right)

I John 1:7

But if we [really] are living and walking in the Light, as He [Himself] is in the Light, we have [true unbroken] fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses (removes) us from all sin and guilt [keeps us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations.]

According to II Corinthians 5:21 we are the righteousness of God. Righteous means, to be able to stand in the presence of God with no sense of guilt or inferiority.

I John 5:14
And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him; [we are sure] that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us.

Fervency is the third prerequisite for intercession
Fervency means fervor, fire, and passion.

James 5:16-17
Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and a heart]. The earnest heartfelt prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].
The King James says, “The effectual fervent prayer”
Elijah was a human being with a nature such as we have [with feelings, affections, and a constitution like ours]: and he prayed earnestly for it not to rain, and no rain fell on the earth for three years and six months. [I Kings 17:1]

Elijah was just as human as we are. He prayed and got results and so can we. We have a better Covenant today than Elijah did. Because he was righteous his prayers made tremendous power available to him. It is the same with us today. When we pray a heartfelt prayer it makes tremendous power available to us.

Romans 12:11
Never lag in zeal and in earnest endeavor; be aglow and burning with the Spirit serving the Lord
.

In this scripture, the word fervent, according to the W. E. Vine translated means, to be hot, to boil. Strong’s adds that figuratively it means to be earnest.

Colossians 4:12
Epaphras, who is one of yourselves, a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. [He is] always striving for you earnestly in his prayers, [pleading] that you may [as persons of ripe character and clear conviction] stand firm and mature [in spiritual growth], convinced and fully assured in everything willed by God.

The Greek word Agonizomai translated “laboring fervently,” indicates a striving, a wrestling.

Ephesians 6:12
For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the powers, against [the rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

If we are not earnest in our intercession we will certainly not be effective. How could someone not be earnest in his or her intercession? By doing it as a law, or just so we can feel like we have done our part, our heart is not in it. To be earnest would mean to do it in your heart. God only sees what you do in your heart. You may be praying on the outside but if you’re not praying in your heart, you’re simply not praying. He only sees what you are doing in your heart. You must pray your heart

Desire is the forth prerequisite
II Corinthians 7:6-7
But God, who comforts and encourages and refreshes and cheers the depressed and the sinking, comforted and encouraged and refreshed and cheered us by the arrival of Titus.
[Yes] and not only by his coming but also by [his account of] the comfort with which he was encouraged and refreshed and cheered as to you, while he told how sorry you were [for me] and how eagerly you took my part, so that I rejoiced still more.

Quote by Reidt: The Corinthians’ “earnest desire” was recognized by Titus and conveyed to Paul. Something happens when the real God-cry, the real God-prayer, and the real God-yearning gets a hold of our spirit.

God lays it on your heart to intercede, and then this [burden, or whatever it is God has laid on your heart] should be the paramount issue of your heart.

When the desire to see the answer come is intensified so that it absorbs all the energies, then that time for the fulfillment is not far away.  This is the desire that brings the answer. It is creative desire.

We need to be determined to respond to the Spirit of God. Respond to those urges to pray.

Sometime there is leading, and sometime there is a burden (strong desire). We need to let God’s supreme desire become our supreme desire.

Perseverance is the fifth prerequisite
Ephesians 6:18
Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people).

Wilford Reidt, sums it up:“When the Holy Spirit lays it upon a person’s heart to intercede, the intercession should not stop until the answer is given or the burden lifted. In my experience, where for the most part I do not know, for whom I am interceding, I have had burdens last for hours and even days. I had to do usual work, but all the time there was that inner groaning in my spirit. The times when I had opportunity to get alone with God, the burden would intensify. There is no rule to follow. Each person will do as God directs.

The reason “persistence” is an ingredient of intercession is that it is easy to throw off a burden and forget it. It is an awesome responsibility to feel that someone’s life may depend on your intercession. Not many believers are willing to accept it. So those that are willing are usually kept very busy.”

PRAY, SAY AND COMMAND
Predestination

Mark 11:23-24
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Therefore I say unto you, What things so ever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them. KJV

In verse 23 we see the word “Say.” In verse 24 we see the word “desire” which can be rendered “ask” which translates demand or command. In this verse we also see the word “pray.” Our method for praying should be Pray, Say and Command.

The will of mankind
We have heard it said that God will not over ride our will. This is true. Why would He want to over ride our will, because our will is the same as His. Our will is God’s will. There is no such thing as an ungodly will; it’s called the spirit of rebellion. Right now God’s will is not being carried out on the earth, except in the lives of those that surrender to Him. If God were running things and pushing His will off on people since He is not willing that any should perish, II Peter 3:9, He would make everybody get saved today and we would go into the millennium tomorrow. Kenneth E. Hagin “The Art of Intercession”

I have heard it said for years that your will to choose God, or not to choose God, is the greatest gift that God has ever given man. This is foolishness. I am not able to find anything in scripture to support that. Deuteronomy 30:19 says that God has set before us life and death, “Therefore choose life.” It doesn’t sound like a choice to me. He commands us to choose life. The only choice we have ever been given is the one to choose life. Because of the substitutionary work of Christ we have been set free from the power of darkness, Colossians 1:13, to choose life. We now have the choice to walk out of darkness and into the Light, (Life). Romans 6:14 tells us that sin no longer has dominion over us. In other words in can’t hold us any longer. All we have to do is choose life. If we do fall into sin, it does not have the power to keep us bound. Our freedom is in our repentance. Galatians 3:13 tells us that we have been redeemed from the curse of the law. God through His Son Jesus paid the price for redemption. We are no longer bound to poverty, sickness and spiritual death. Our gift of choice is the ability to choose life.

Faith substance
We are made out of faith substance which is Word substance which is Will of God substance. Gal 5:6, Eph 6:16, II Cor 5:7, Phil 1:27, I Thes 1:8, Col 2:7, Rom 4:20, 5:21, 10:8, 10:17,12:6, 16:26,

Hebrew 11:1
Now faith is the substance of
THINGS hoped for the evidence of things not seen.

John 1:3
   All
THINGS were made and came into existence through Him (Jesus)

Col 1:16
   For it was
in Him that all THINGS were created.

How did Jesus create all things? With faith substance which is His Word. We are part of all things He created. Therefore we are made out of faith substance. If we are made out of faith substance which is Word substance which is God’s Will substance then certainly this would prove that we are made out of a substance that glorifies God. God breathed our spirit man into us 6000 years ago when He breathed (spoke) breath into Adam.

Before the Foundation
Ephesians 1:4-5
Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually picked us out for Himself as His own]
in Christ

Before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love.
For He foreordained us (destined us, planned in love for us) to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will [because it pleased Him and was His kind intent.

In Christ? Could this mean that we were in Him before the foundation of the world?

Ephesians 1:11-13

In Him we also were made [God’s] heritage (portion) and we obtained an inheritance; for we had been foreordained (chosen and appointed beforehand) in accordance with His purpose, Who works out everything in agreement with the counsel and design of His [own] will.
So that we who first hoped in Christ [who first put our confidence in him have been destined and appointed to] live for the praise of His glory!

In Him you also who have heard the Word of Truth, the glad tidings (Gospel) of your salvation, and have believed in and adhered to and relied on Him, were stamped with the seal of the long-promised Holy Spirit.

Colossians 1:16-17
   For it was
in Him that all things were created in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [by His service intervention] and in and for Him.
And He Himself existed before all things, and
in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together).

God had an image or blue print. He knew us from this image.

Romans 8:29-30
For those whom He fore-knew [of whom He was aware and loved beforehand], He also destined from the beginning [foreordaining them] to be molded into the image of His Son [and share
inwardly His likeness], that He might become the firstborn among many brethren.
And those whom He thus foreordained, He also called; and those whom he called, He also justified (acquitted, made righteous, putting them into right standing with Himself), And those whom He justified, He also glorified [raising them to a heavenly dignity and condition or state of being.]
Ephesians 2:6

Revelation 17:14
They will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will triumph over them for He is Lord of lords and King of kings and those with Him and on His side are chosen and called [elected] and loyal and faithful followers.

Who are those He has called? Everyone.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believe in Him should not perish but have ever lasting life.

Matthew 22:14
For many are called but few are chosen.

We are all called; those who show up are the chosen, those who keep showing up are the faithful.

Our Will is Different Than our Choices
Romans 7:15-25

Paul’s will was different than the choices He was making. Our “choices” are made from the sin principle that is at work in us from the soulish realm, or from the realm of our recreated spirit.

James 1:14

But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire (lust, passions).

John 14:30
I will not talk with you much more, for the prince (evil genius, ruler) of the world is coming. And he has no claim on Me. [He has nothing in common with Me; there is nothing in Me that belongs to him, and he has no power over Me.]

Notice you are only tempted when you are drawn away. We have always said it is not a sin to be tempted, but I submit to you that it is. Because if you are not drawn away you can’t be tempted. What are you drawn away from? The Word. Letting yourself be drawn away from the Word is a sin. So if you are being tempted you know you have been drawn away by your own desires. Temptation is to consider sin. In Luke 4 Jesus was not tempted as we have supposed but rather He was approached by the tempter who came to temp Him. He responded with the Word never considering the temptation.

Luke 14:38
Keep awake and watch and pray [constantly], that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

The King James reads the Spirit is ready but the flesh is weak. Your spirit is ready and willing to resist temptation. Ready and willing to do good. Ready and willing to do the Father’s will.

Your want-to is always to do right. But your intellect can get in the way causing you to make the wrong choice even though, you “will” to do right. Following your intellect you will make the choice to do something other than what you want to do. You may want to write that $10,000.00 check to a certain ministry but you don’t because you are governed more by the soul (intellect) than your human spirit. Your soul must come under the subjection of your human spirit, which is filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can only lead you when your human spirit is the acting governor of your life. Your human spirit cannot govern unless it is filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit then leads from the place of your human spirit.

Praying for the lost
I can’t find any place in the Bible where Jesus prayed for the lost. He said for us to pray for laborers to be sent into the field of harvest, Luke 10:2. When I pray for the lost such as lost family members, I pray for the Lord to send laborers into the field to minister to them. I then begin to pray the Word over them, like Eph 1:18. I pray that the eyes of their heart would be flooded with the light of the Word. That they would realize that they need a savior. I call them out of the world of darkness and into the Kingdom of Light. Col 1:13, I Peter 2:9, Acts 26:18. We have the right to pray, say, and command. I pray for Christians that are falling short of the Word of God like this:

I break the power of pride in their life in Jesus name. I call the god of this world under their feet. I command their heart to put a demand on the Word of God and the Presence of God.  I call forth the Will of God in their life and I call them out of all ungodly relationships. I command their spirit to stand up and take charge and be that governing force that God created them to be. They were created to worship God and so they shall, in Jesus name.

Do we have a right to do this? We have a right to command satan. But how can we command people? Our human spirit is the part of us that is in the same class as God. This is who we really are. This is the only part of us that can believe the Word of God, Romans 10:10. The real desire of our human spirit is a desire for God. When someone is making the wrong choices they do not will to do so, but are yielding to the sinful nature of the flesh, blinded by the god of this world.

II Corinthians 4:4
For the God of this world has blinded
(Pride or Pride of life) the unbelievers minds [that they should not discern the truth], preventing them from seeing the illuminating light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ (the Messiah), Who is the Image and Likeness of God. (Emphases Mine)

Smoke Screen of Pride:
1. The same word which means to dull the intellect to make blind, also means making smoke
or smoke screen to the point of prohibiting a person from seeing.

2. From this same root word comes the word that is used for being high minded, proud or inflated with self conceit. Being puffed up much like smoke puffs.

3. The sin of pride was passed on from Lucifer to humankind in the garden that satan uses to blind men.

4. Pride keeps the unbeliever from giving their life over to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Who is the god of this world to us? He’s no match. He’s lost all of his power, Luke 10:18, Colossians 2:15.

Believers have the authority to command the hearts of others to get in line with the Word, to get in touch with their real “want to,” call forth the will of God in their life, command their heart to put a demand on the Word and Presence of God. When we command, we are just simply repeating the Word. Commanding is repeating the Word. The Word of God is more powerful than the darkness that the god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers with.

There are also unbelieving believers. Such as believers who only believe in part. This again is because the god of this world has blinded their minds with the darkness of pride. Again, we have authority over the god of this world.

What Word Am I Repeating?
We command our body to line up with God. When sickness sends it’s voice (the symptoms) we command them out of our body by applying Word pressure I Peter 2:24 etc. Then we command our body to be healed. When we pray for other people we command their body as well. Why do we stop there? Why can’t we deal with someone’s soul? Why can’t we call someone’s spirit to rise up and take charge and be that governing force that it was created to be? Some would say, “Well you can if that person is in agreement with you.” What about someone, who is deluded, they don’t even realize they are on the wrong road. They may be making choices based on deception. Do we just leave them alone and say, “Hey it’s their choice,” NO! So many people are not in touch with their real “want-to,” and that is to worship God, to worship and serve Him -- to fulfill their call and purpose on earth, which is to worship God, to glorify God by winning the lost. James 1:21 says the Word of God has the power to save souls.

When you’re dealing with a Christian who is walking in deception, dealing meaning praying for them, you have the right to call that deception off of them. Sometimes there may be someone in my spirit on a daily basis and I will call deception off of them and once that thing is broke off of them, now they can get in touch with their “want-to,” which is what God wills and wants.

So far I have established that Jesus, the Word, created all things and that faith is the substance of all things. He created us therefore we are created out of faith substance. When God breathed His breath into Adam He breathed Faith substance, the human spirit.

Measure of Faith
Romans 12:3
For by the grace (unmerited favor of God) given to me I warn everyone among you not to estimate and think of himself more highly than he ought [not to have an exaggerated opinion of his own importance] but to rate his ability with sober judgment, each according to the degree of faith apportioned by God to him.

We have all been dealt the same measure of faith. If we had not been made up of faith substance we would never be able to believe in and on God. People have asked the question many times, “What about people who never hear the Gospel message, will they go to heaven?” My answer to that question is; Romans chapter one says that people can look at God’s creation and know there is a God. The reason for this is because they (people) are made up of a substance that desires God. Their spirit is able to bear witness with nature, as we are all a part of the same creation. Once they see that there is a God they begin to desire Him, because they are made up of a substance that desires God. Jesus, the Word, made everything with faith substance. He made man in His image, and He created all things with faith substance. We have the same power with the Word of God (faith substance) to create, construct, and build. Romans 10:10 says that with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. You can’t even get saved without the Word (your mouth). We make (create) our salvation by our confession, John 15:7. To say that you can’t pray the Word of God over someone intensely on a daily basis to get him or her saved is profanity. This is saying that the Word of God doesn’t have enough power to change a heart and turn it to God.
